Welcome to Scientific Computing! Couple of quick things:
1. For now, keep yourself muted unless you’re talking.
2. We’re going to use the #in_class channel for chatting in class. I will post this log, along with the recording of the zoom session, after class.

1. How is scientific programming different from other types of programming? (reply in thread)
Elena Wall
2020-03-30 10:05:35
It is a tool to solve an interesting scientific problem, where the solution is not the program itself.

2. What might make learning to program hard? (reply in thread)
Elena Wall

If you dont learn syntax, then you wont be able to convince a dumb computer to do what you want... that would make programming hard.

Mike, I'm not sure which channel to post this in. Zoom keeps freezing on me (I've restarted 6 times now) so I am missing the whole class .... 😞 Sorry !!

still looking into this - I'm seeing some weird stuff on the internet about graphics cards problems potentially. has zoom every worked on your computer before?

I used it to talk with Luis on Saturday

Ok, just tried a 7th time - froze immediately. I'm going to restart my computer.

I got in this time, hasn't crashed yet! Am I too far behind now?

You should be good! Haven't gone through much yet, Mike is describing how we will be pairing people up to learn to code. No content yet

Was I already assigned a partner?
Joseph Harman
2020-03-30 09:23:43
Working on that...having issues with breakout rooms currently, but we're all in one classroom at the moment
Maggie Weitzman
2020-03-30 09:28:12
Oh no, it just froze again when you opened all rooms.

Alright, this is definitely not working. Please apologize for me to whoever was assigned as my partner!

I've tried 3 different sets of audio (one hardwired in monitor, 2 bluetooth devices), it crashes with all of them, so I don't think it's related to the audio hardware

Not sure what to do from here. I guess I can't take the class?
Joseph Harman
2020-03-30 09:38:54
we can definitely get it sorted out, just might take some messing around with it. I'll keep looking into options. Maybe start with updating or uninstalling/reinstalling zoom? Shooting in the dark here

Ok, installed zoom, restarted computer, re-installed, joined audio via phone instead of hardware, hasn't crashed yet....

Ha, no I am also asking this question
Anneliese Morrison
2020-03-30 09:13:20
if you click on the participants tab on the bottom of the zoom screen you see a list of participants. at the bottom of that list there is a blue hand that says raise hand
Question: Can folks auditing the class still "submit" labs? Don't think we are on the canvas site or anything.
Lila Kaye

I would also like to do this. It's my first time auditing and I'd love a run down of expectations and what is different about this than a normal class.

1. Scientific programming involves using programming as a way to solve an interesting scientific problem.
Natanya Villegas
2020-03-30 09:59:36
2. Learning how to program might be hard because it is necessary to use syntax and language while thinking algorithmically
